April 22, 2024 | Sherrard Kuzz LLP

On April 16, 2024, the federal government tabled its 2024 Budget, “Fairness for Every Generation” (Budget).

Among other items, several proposed legislative amendments have implications for employers. These include:

  • An amendment to the Canada Labour Code to require a federally regulated employer to implement a “right to disconnect” policy limiting work-related communication outside of working hours
  • An amendment to the Canada Labour Code to strengthen prohibitions against employee misclassification purportedly to improve job protection for federally regulated gig workers
  • An amendment to the Employment Equity Act to expand the designated equity groups
  • Creation of a working group to explore ways to enhance domestic investment opportunities for Canadian pension funds.

We will continue to monitor these matters and keep our readers apprised of developments.
